Empowering Girls with Reusable Sanitary Pads

In many communities across Tanzania, menstruation remains a major barrier to education for girls. Without access to affordable sanitary products, many girls miss school during their periods — and some drop out entirely. At KICE Foundation, we believe that no girl should have to choose between her education and her dignity.

Why We Started the Sanitary Pads Program

When we began working in Kahe Ward, Moshi Rural District, we discovered that a significant number of adolescent girls were missing 3–5 days of school every month due to their periods. Many families cannot afford disposable pads, and girls often resort to using rags, newspapers, or even cow dung — which puts them at risk of infections and humiliation.

In 2023, we launched the Reusable Sanitary Pads Program to address this challenge. Our goal is simple: keep girls in school and empower them with knowledge and confidence.

How the Program Works

Every girl who joins our program receives a sanitary pad kit that includes:

• 7 reusable sanitary pads — enough to last the entire cycle.
• 2 pairs of underwear for hygiene and comfort.
• Soap and a waterproof bag for washing and storing pads.
• Menstrual hygiene education — including proper use, washing, and disposal.
• Health and nutrition talks to support overall well-being.

We also hold community awareness sessions for parents and teachers to break the stigma around menstruation and encourage open conversations.

Impact So Far

Since the program began, we have reached over 650 girls in Kahe Ward and surrounding areas. The results have been remarkable:

Teachers report that girls are now more active in class and participate fully. Many girls have expressed their desire to pursue higher education and careers, knowing that they no longer have to miss school due to their periods.

Meet Grace — A Success Story

Grace, 14, was on the verge of dropping out of school. She missed so many days that she fell behind in her studies. After joining our program, Grace received her pad kit and attended our menstrual hygiene workshop. Today, she attends school every day and is among the top students in her class.

Our Future Plans

We are expanding the program to reach 1,000 girls by the end of 2026. We are also working on:

• Local production of reusable pads to create jobs and reduce costs.
• Menstrual health clubs in schools to sustain peer support.
• Advocacy for policies that provide free sanitary products in schools.
