Student Success Story

From Dropout
to Top of the Class

Grace was on the verge of dropping out. Today, she's top of her class and dreaming of becoming a doctor.

Grace, Form 4 Arusha, Tanzania KICE Foundation Scholar

Grace's story begins like that of many girls in rural Tanzania — bright, curious, and full of dreams. But poverty, household chores, and the long walk to school were slowly eroding her hope. By the time she reached Form 2, she had already missed more than half the school year. Her parents, though loving, could barely afford the school fees and supplies. Dropping out seemed inevitable.

But then, something shifted. A teacher from the KICE Foundation visited her village, looking for students who had fallen through the cracks. Grace was identified, and she was given a second chance — a scholarship, a mentor, and a place in the foundation's after-school support program. Today, Grace is not only back in school — she is at the top of her class, and she dreams of becoming a doctor.

“I used to think that education was for other people — for those with money, with time, with hope. Now I know it's for anyone who refuses to give up.” — Grace, speaking about her journey

Turning Point

When Grace joined KICE's support program, she was reading at a primary school level. Her confidence was shattered. But with consistent tutoring, mentoring, and the provision of books and uniforms, her transformation was remarkable.

How KICE Helped Grace

The journey from dropout to top of the class wasn't easy. It took a village — and a tailored approach that addressed every barrier Grace faced.

Scholarship & Supplies

Full tuition coverage, plus uniforms, textbooks, and stationery — removing financial barriers.

Academic Mentorship

One-on-one tutoring in math, English, and science, tailored to her learning gaps.

Nutrition Support

Daily meals through the Lishe program ensured she had the energy to focus in class.

Emotional & Social Support

Regular check-ins with a mentor, helping her build confidence and resilience.

“Grace was so quiet when she first came to us — she barely spoke in class. But little by little, she began to shine. Now she leads study groups and even helps younger students with their homework. She is a true leader.”

— Amina Mwangi, Grace's mentor at KICE

Dreams of Healing

Grace's ambition to become a doctor was born from a personal tragedy — the loss of her younger sister to a preventable illness because the nearest clinic was three hours away. “I want to be the doctor who brings healthcare to villages like mine,” she says. “I want to heal, not just bodies, but hope.”

With her current grades, Grace is on track to qualify for a prestigious secondary school scholarship, and eventually, medical school. She is already studying biology and chemistry with extra passion, determined to make her dream a reality.

“I want to be a doctor because no child should lose a sibling to a sickness that could have been cured.” — Grace, on her motivation to become a doctor

A Message to Others

When asked what she would say to other girls who are struggling to stay in school, Grace's answer is immediate: "Usikate tamaa" — don't lose hope. “There is always a way. Find a teacher, find a mentor, find someone who believes in you. And never stop believing in yourself, even when the road is hard.”

Grace's story is a shining example of the transformative power of education. She is not just a statistic — she is a beacon of hope for her entire community. And her journey is far from over.
