Reusable sanitary pads project

Menstruation and access to sanitary pads are challenges that significantly hinder the girl child’s access to continued quality education. Girls face embarrassment during menstruation and most will have their first period while at school, which can be very frustrating. Girls who do not have access to pads miss three to four class days each month during their menstrual cycle, which adds up to 30 to 40 missed school days per year. This is a big challenge that affects these  Girl children.

Menstruation is very costly, and it is a cost that has not been brought to light, our reusable pads are a healthy solution for most girls who can’t afford to buy disposable pads in the villages and are also environmentally friendly.

With three, sewing machines and the help of two tailors, we are producing reusable pads by procuring locally available materials. Through a donation of 16,000 Tanzania shillings (6.5USD), one girl will receive a bag with 7 reusable pads that she may use for one year and a flier that she can read more about menstruation Hygiene. We don’t only give pads but also we explain to them what menstruation is about, and why they need to ask for help when it happens.

Our reusable pads have impacted more than 450 girls students. This victory means that our initiative is appreciated by society and the community we are working with.
